Image Quality in Mobile Teledermoscopy

Teledermatology uses photos or videoconference to allow physician-patient interaction without being in the same physical room.  I analyze data to assess and improve the delivery of health care using teledermatology, such as quality of images, the capacity of clinicians to give a diagnosis using only photos, and the patient’s experience.    This kind of research is essential, especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic, when everyone is trying to stop the spread of the virus while ensuring adequate delivery of health services.  It is also important because, with teledermatology, rural communities or individuals located in underbudget areas can still have access to the same healthcare benefits that we, people living in metropolitan areas, enjoy.   Finally, with a growing number of people connected to the internet and having mobile devices worldwide, teledermatology can change healthcare delivery in low and middle-income countries, where rural populations are more extensive and resources scarce.

About me

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow based at the Dermatology Research Centre at the Diamantina Institute. I am a biologist from the University of Antioquia in Colombia, and I completed a Ph.D. in Genetics and Bioinformatics from QUT in 2015. I have worked as a postdoctoral fellow at QUT and QIMR Berghofer, and I have also held multiple lecturing positions, teaching Molecular Biology and Genetics, in universities from Colombia and the Caribbean.  I am also the founder and director for a  non-for-porfit organisation called "Project Huitaca" which brings together English-speaking researchers who edit manuscripts for Latin American Women in Science.
