To Patent or not to Patent?

Around 50 people attended the second TRI Breakfast forum on Tuesday 2 July.  The topic, “To patent or not to patent’, came out of discussions from the first Forum in February on ‘Success needs multiple perspectives with a unity of purpose.’  The aim of these forums is to get academic and clinical researchers exploring the challenges of translating medical innovation with expert input from corporates, legal, investors and entrepreneurs.

This forum chaired by TRI CEO and Director of Research Professor Carolyn Mountford saw Dr Elizabeth Sigston, a Head and Neck clinician with Monash Health present on entrepreneurship in the medical space; followed by Blake Wills, CEO Microba on the journey from idea to international licencing; Vanessa Mellis, Special Counsel from Minter Ellison briefly explained IP, Commercialisation, Licensing and Copyright in health and research institutions; and Professor Mountford explained her experience with patenting in the imaging space.

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion, which included the speakers plus Dr Mark Ashton from UQ Uniquest and Dr Andrew Leech from QUT bluebox.  The questions ranged from how and when to develop a commercialisation strategy, including when to patent, to dealing with IP in a student’s thesis.  This generated a lot of interest and will be the topic of the next Forum in October.

Perspectives on sharing Intellectual Property (IP) between academic researchers, clinicians and business people.

Join us for the second TRI Forum where we will explore the question To Patent or not to Patent? Formulated in response to the lively panel discussions from Forum #1 held in February we have lined up presentations from three researchers who have commercialised a medical innovation, and a lawyer specialising in IP, commercialisation, licensing and copyright in health and research institutions.

The presentations will be followed by a discussion panel with a Q&A session with audience participation. On the panel you will hear from experts from QUT’s bluebox and UQ’s Uniquest.

This is a registration only event and will include senior academics, clinicians, policy makers and entrepreneurs.
