Dr Michael Wagels has pioneered the implementation of an exciting technology, using 3D printed scaffolds to replace missing bone, which then promotes the regrowth of natural bone.

The Case

The patient had a bone infection in his shin, which affected almost the entire length of bone. In the past this would have resulted in an above the knee amputation.

The Solution

Dr Wagels and the team inserted a 3D-printed scaffold with lining of the patients own bone wrapped inside, into the patients leg to support and direct the growth of new bone. The scaffold used is bioresorbable so it gets very quickly integrated with the body’s own tissues and then dissolves.

The Outcome

Over the course of 18-24 months the patient grew sufficient bone to have an entirely new shinbone allowing them to walk again.
